Eight-five percent of Britons say their strongest childhood memories were created during small, unplanned moments rather than major occasions, according to a study by Samsung.
Fondest memories ranked
Nostalgic Brits claim family holidays (43%), watching films together (32%), family meals (26%), car journeys (16%) and playing games (14%) ranked among the nation's fondest childhood memories.
Of the 2,000 Brits quizzed, 28% often reminisce and browse through older photos and videos, while one-fifth of Gen Z-ers look weekly. Taking these trips down memory lane spark feelings of nostalgia (48%), happiness (39%), connection (33%) and comfort (29%).
Film inspired by findings
Inspired by these findings, commissioned to mark the launch of the new Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Samsung has released a new film called Life's Little Moments. It follows an expectant father imagining his daughter growing up as he heads to the hospital for her birth.
The film captures the small, everyday moments that shape a father-daughter relationship, spanning childhood discoveries, teenage arguments and the joy of moving into a first home, all anchored by a voice note he records to his own father about becoming a dad.
Technology and memory
According to the study, technology is increasingly shaping how people appreciate and preserve memories. A mammoth 76% agree that taking photos and videos helps them value simple experiences more, while 81% believe it helps them feel closer to the people who matter most.
The film includes scenes where the father and daughter are playing games in the garden, mirroring the fact that 14% of Brits hold this as their most cherished childhood memory. As the narrative progresses and the daughter heads to school, a tender scene plays out where the father takes a proud photograph of her on her last day of primary school.
Family meals and connection
With more than a third of Brits citing family meals as their fondest childhood memory, the film also features a key scene between father and daughter in the kitchen, where they cook dinner together using a small crab-shaped egg timer.
The timer, first given to his daughter when she is young, is seen at key moments throughout her life and becomes a quiet symbol of their bond. This reflects that more than a third of 18-34-year-olds hold cooking with a family member as one of their fondest memories.
Ultimately, it's the people, not the place or activity, that make moments meaningful. More than three-quarters (78%) say who they shared an experience with mattered most, rising to 83% among adults in their late 20s and early 30s.
