Jamie Carragher has branded FIFA president Gianni Infantino a 'disgrace' and accused England manager Thomas Tuchel of prioritising harmony over talent when selecting his 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The former Liverpool defender did not hold back in his criticism, particularly over the omission of Trent Alexander-Arnold and several other high-profile players.
Carragher's Verdict on Infantino
Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, a World Cup Special brought to you by Sky Bet, Carragher launched a scathing attack on Infantino. FIFA has faced backlash for allegedly working with unofficial resale platforms to sell tickets for low-demand matches and for high ticket prices. Carragher said: 'He's a disgrace, that fella, Infantino – I can't stand him. I really have a big problem with him.'
Tuchel's Squad Selection Under Fire
Carragher believes Tuchel has prioritised harmony over talent by leaving out Alexander-Arnold, Harry Maguire, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Morgan Gibbs-White, and Jarrod Bowen. 'I think when you look at the squad, Thomas Tuchel put energy, athleticism, and harmony over talent,' Carragher said. 'Most people would say Harry Maguire is a better player than Dan Burn, but I know he loves Dan Burn in and around the squad.'
He added: 'I know Anthony Barry a little, and they put great store in togetherness and how we're going to be as a group for six weeks. But this is bigger than just having talent. We can't have anybody who brings the group down or shows negativity about not playing. Tuchel knows that Foden, Palmer, and Trent are three of the most technical players we have, but they're not in the squad.'
England's Tactical Approach
Carragher noted that England's game plan will not rely on 'amazing football' but on set pieces and pace. 'When he picked the four wingers – Madueke, Saka, Gordon, and Rashford – normally you'd have a quick one and one who gets between the lines. But no, our wingers are just going to be fast. It's about pace, energy, runners. That was the criticism of Southgate – too many of those players trying to fit in.'
Bellingham May Not Start
Carragher also suggested that Jude Bellingham might not start England's opening Group L match against Croatia in Dallas on June 17. 'Tuchel has shown how he's dealt with Bellingham – he's left him out of squads. There's a relationship to be worked on. Unless Morgan Rogers gets injured, I don't see Bellingham starting the first game.'
Pessimistic Outlook for England
Despite the talent available, Carragher expressed concerns about England's chances. 'Gareth Southgate will be more appreciated in five to 10 years. I think England will find it tough. There are good Premier League players, but not all are international players. I'm not the most optimistic right now.'
England also face Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27 in Group L. The tournament kicks off on Thursday, and all eyes will be on Tuchel's side as they aim to end decades of hurt.
