Don Don Yatai, a popular Japanese restaurant in Ely, Cardiff, has announced it will close its doors at the end of August after five years of operation. The restaurant, located on Cowbridge Road West, shared the news on social media, thanking customers for their loyalty and support.
Restaurant's journey and accolades
Opened in 2021 during the coronavirus pandemic, Don Don Yatai quickly gained recognition, winning the Welsh Restaurant Awards for best sushi in 2023 and also being named the best Japanese restaurant in Cardiff that same year. The restaurant was founded by Hong Kong-born David Chan, 42, and his wife Hayman, who brought over a decade of hospitality experience from Asia to Wales.
Reason for closure
In a heartfelt Instagram post, the team expressed gratitude for the support received over the years. They explained that the founder and head chef has developed a new career, leading to the difficult decision to close, despite their deep attachment to the journey. They also expressed hope to reopen Don Don Yatai in Cardiff in the future.
The restaurant's final service days will be on Fridays and Saturdays starting August 7, with the last day on Saturday, August 29. The team encouraged regulars to book and 'make these last moments together unforgettable.'
Other recent closures in Cardiff
The closure follows the recent shutdown of Ffloc, a popular café in Canton known for its cheese toasties and coffee, which closed earlier in the summer after its lease expired. It is set to become a second home for Canna Deli. Additionally, Queer Emporium on St Mary Street, an LGBTQ+ space open for five years, will also close this month.
