Bonnie Tyler, the iconic Welsh singer known for hits like "Total Eclipse of the Heart," died at age 75 in a Portuguese hospital following a months-long health battle. Her family confirmed the news on her official website, stating she passed away unexpectedly from the illness she was being treated for. They requested privacy and said a further statement would be issued.
Health Decline and Emergency Surgery
Bonnie's health issues began in May 2026 when she developed severe abdominal pain at her home in the Algarve, Portugal. She was initially treated at a private hospital before being transferred to Faro Hospital, where doctors discovered her appendix had burst and performed emergency intestinal surgery.
According to family friend Liberto Mealha, the singer sought medical help after becoming seriously unwell while in Portugal.
Coma and Cardiac Arrest
Following the operation, Bonnie's condition worsened. She was placed into a medically induced coma to aid recovery as doctors managed complications. Portuguese media later reported she suffered a cardiac arrest after the procedure and had to be resuscitated.
Earlier in July, her representatives confirmed she had been brought out of the coma but remained in intensive care and was still "very unwell." Despite weeks of treatment, she died in hospital.
Career and Legacy
Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, South Wales, Bonnie Tyler rose to international fame with hits including "It's a Heartache," "Total Eclipse of the Heart," and "Holding Out for a Hero." She remained active in music and had been scheduled for a European tour in 2026 before her illness forced her to cancel performances.
Her family have said a further statement will be released in due course.
