Ayr United's most iconic figure, Ally MacLeod, and his famous 1969 team have been immortalised in a new t-shirt. The merchandise celebrates the legendary squad that defeated Rangers in what is considered Somerset Park's greatest ever game.
Legendary line-up honoured
The t-shirt features the names of the iconic team: Stewart, Malone, Murphy, Fleming, Quinn, Mitchell, Young, Ferguson, Ingram, McCulloch and Rough. It also displays a famous image of MacLeod leaping from the Somerset dugout.
Ally's daughter, Gail Pirie, praised the design, telling the Ayrshire Post: "Anything with my dad's name on it is fantastic. As my mum always says...it's keeps his memory alive. I might even have to buy her one to wear!"
A tribute to a beloved manager
She added: "There's been a couple of t-shirts over the years with caricatures, but personally I love this photo of him jumping from the dugout. They couldn't have picked a better image."
Gail noted that the team predates many current fans, but its legacy endures. "Most of our current fans didn't know my dad and never met him. Even the chairman said to me he never met him, but like so many others he idolised him and we have the Ally MacLeod Suite in hospitality and his memorial at the side of the Hub - and now a t-shirt. Here's hoping it's a lucky omen for the season ahead!"
Where to buy
The t-shirts are on sale now, priced at £24.99, at United's Club Shop or online.
