Aldi's Dairyfine Giant Buttons Cookies have been crowned the best supermarket bakery cookies in a taste test, scoring a perfect 5/5 while costing just 36p each.
The winner was chosen by Millie Bull, Deputy Editor of Spare Time, who compared four supermarket bakery cookies against the gold standard of Marks and Spencer. M&S Milk Chocolate Cookies, priced at £3.10 for a pack of five (62p each), were not available for the test but were previously rated four out of five by the tester.
Aldi takes top spot
Aldi's cookies, priced at £1.45 for four, were praised for their wonderful chew and a saltiness that the others lacked. The additional salty flavour lent the cookies a more complex profile, bringing out the cocoa notes and rendering them irresistible.
While the chocolate quality was not the best, the tester concluded that premium chocolate is not necessarily what makes a great chocolate cookie. The Aldi cookies were said to surpass M&S, offering a generous amount of chocolate, a delightful salty-sweet flavour and the ideal texture.
Co-op and Sainsbury's results
Co-op's Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies, £1.75 for five (35p each), scored 3.5/5. They were sweet without being overwhelming and carried a buttery, lightly caramelised flavour, though slightly on the small side.
Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Belgian Milk Chocolate Cookies, £2.25 for four (56p each), scored 2.5/5. Despite an impressive 4.2 out of five rating on Sainsbury's website, the tester found the texture reminiscent of shortbread and too rich in butter, with the cookies turning increasingly crumbly after a day.
Sainsbury's standard Milk Chocolate Cookies, £1.50 for five (30p each), scored 2/5. They were deemed decidedly average, with decent chewiness but lacking sufficient chocolate chunks or a hint of salt.
