Tim Curry, the actor whose portrayal of Dr Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show made him a cult icon, has died aged 79. The news was confirmed by his family, who said he died peacefully at home in London on Thursday morning.
Career highlights
Curry's career spanned more than five decades, encompassing stage, film and television. He first gained attention in the West End and Broadway, but it was his role as the transvestite scientist in the 1975 film adaptation of Richard O'Brien's musical that cemented his status as a pop-culture phenomenon.
His other notable film roles included the sinister clown Pennywise in the 1990 TV miniseries It, based on Stephen King's novel, and the butler Wadsworth in the 1985 comedy Clue. He also voiced the villain in the animated film The Wild Thornberrys Movie.
Stage and screen legacy
Born in Warrington, Cheshire, Curry trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before making his professional debut in the 1968 musical Hair. He later starred in the West End production of The Rocky Horror Show, originating the role of Frank-N-Furter in 1973.
His later stage work included roles in Amadeus, Travesties and The Pirates of Penzance, for which he received a Tony nomination. He continued acting into the 2010s, appearing in television series such as Will & Grace and The Colbert Report.
Health and final years
In 2012, Curry suffered a severe stroke that left him using a wheelchair and affecting his speech. Despite this, he continued to work, providing voice roles in animated projects and making public appearances.
His family said in a statement: "Tim was a hugely talented actor who brought joy to millions through his work. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him."
Curry is survived by his sister and her family.
