Sam Wood, a British contemporary painter born in Newcastle in 1994, is showcasing a series of original oil paintings at the Hancock Gallery in Newcastle City Centre. The exhibition, titled Evening Walkthrough, captures the fading light between day and night across familiar North East landscapes.
Paintings of everyday North East scenes
The works follow figures through everyday landscapes across the region, often captured through photography taken by Wood himself. He would go out walking and find vignettes to capture as he went, using friends as models in various locations. The paintings feature notable areas such as Heaton Park and were created within the last 18 months.
Local acclaim and new commission
Wood has been a bestseller for the gallery in the past, thanks to his local status and paintings of local scenes, which draw many gallery-goers to his work. Beyond local acclaim, he has been commissioned to create art for the Mercury Award, which returns to Newcastle in late October. His work is now available to view and purchase at the Hancock Gallery in central Newcastle.
