New Look has faced criticism after a shopper discovered strapless, lacy dresses, bandeau tops, and crop tops in its 915 children's range. Megan Kilgour, who posts as @bymegankilgour on Instagram, shared a video with her 5,000+ followers showing the items, calling the retailer's choices 'not ok.'
Shopper's Reaction
Kilgour's video, which garnered over 9,800 likes, featured text overlay stating: 'Walked into New Look and had to do a double take. Since when did kid's fashion grow up this fast? This is not ok.' In the caption, she added: 'New Look has a lot to answer for! Walked into new look and had to double take. This isn't 'fashion forward'... it's crossing a line. Who are these kids' clothes really for?'
Mixed Reactions Online
The post sparked a debate among parents. One mum declared: 'Thank you! I have an 8-year-old daughter and she does not need to be dressed like Dirrty era Xtina.' Another commented: 'Oh my God, I said this.' A third remarked: 'I went into the kids section of New Look still thinking it was the adult section.'
However, some defended the clothing. One individual stated: 'Honestly can't see much wrong with these for age 9+ nothing is majorly revealing.' Another observed: 'Baring the lace, we were definitely wearing stuff like this in the late 90's early 2000's as kids - halternecks and strapless tops were the in thing and it's just recirculating.' A third noted: 'Nobody remember 'Tammy Girl' in the 90s - so bad. I begged to be allowed clothes from there but was strictly banned.'
