An "unusually aggressive" animal has attacked at least three people in under two days in Lebanon, New Hampshire, with police suspecting the same wild creature is behind all the incidents. Witnesses described the animal as either a grey fox or a grey fisher, a carnivorous mammal native to North America.
All three attacks were reported near the Centerra Park area on Sunday, and police believe the animal's aggression could be a sign it has rabies. The disease attacks an animal's central nervous system, causing severe brain inflammation that can lead to viciousness.
Footage shows creature charging
One person captured footage of the animal charging at people, launching itself onto a person's bag before going for the man's feet and legs in full attack mode. The man responded with a swift kick in self-defence.
Attacks believed to have been caused by the creature spanned both Sunday and Monday not far from Centerra Parkway in Lebanon. Residents are now being warned to stay indoors and remain "aware of their surroundings" after the spate of attacks.
Police warn of rabies risk
Lebanon Police Chief Phillip Roberts said: "It's concerning because of the animal attacking people. That's usually indicative of something being wrong with the animal, most likely rabies." In an interview with Manchester TV station WMUR-T, he added: "And then, you know, the fact that it's coming out and scratching and biting at people. That's obviously a concern to us."
One local told the outlet: "Oh my goodness, that's the scariest thing." They added: "Like there's not enough to look out for these days, now you gotta look out for fisher cats in the parking lot."
Search underway with Fish and Game
Police are working with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department to locate the creature and determine whether it is suffering from rabies, a fatal viral disease. Locals are urged not to approach, catch, feed, or interact with the animal in any way.
Officials said anyone who sees the animal should move to a safe distance and location and call Lebanon Police or officers from the Fish and Game squad.
