Netflix has announced a slew of major stars joining its upcoming period drama 'Bad Bridgets', including Colin Farrell, Charlie Heaton, and Steve Coogan. The series, based on the book 'Bad Bridget: Crime, Mayhem and the Lives of Irish Emigrant Women' by academics Elaine Farrell and Leanne McCormick, follows a young Irish woman's journey to 19th-century New York.
Star-Studded Cast Announced
Earlier this year, Netflix revealed that 'Locke and Key' actress Emilia Jones and 'Wuthering Heights' star Alison Oliver would lead the cast. Now, additional names include 'Banshees of Inisherin' actor Colin Farrell, 'Stranger Things' icon Charlie Heaton, and 'Alan Partridge' legend Steve Coogan. Also joining are 'About Time' star Domhnall Gleeson, 'Enola Holmes' actor Himesh Patel, 'The Irish Affair' actress Niamh Algar, and 'Kneecap's Simone Kirby.
Plot and Inspiration
The term 'bad bridget' was coined by Farrell and McCormick to describe impoverished Irish women who emigrated to America and Canada but often struggled to survive. The official Netflix description reads: 'When a mysterious letter offering escape leads a young Irish woman to 19th-century New York, she is pulled into the unruly world of the Bridgets, where mayhem follows in her wake.'
Production Details
Written, directed, and produced by BAFTA winner Rich Peppiatt, known for 'Kneecap' and 'One Rogue Reporter', the series also features cinematographer Ryan Kernaghan and production designer James Price, an Academy Award winner for 'Poor Things'. Filming is set to begin in Ireland and Northern Ireland this month, with support from Queen's University Belfast and Northern Ireland Screen. A release date has not yet been announced.
