Kelly Reilly, known globally for her portrayal of ruthless financier Beth Dutton in Paramount+'s Yellowstone, appeared in the BBC period drama Poldark long before her rise to fame. The 1996 Poldark TV film, broadcast on the BBC, was the original adaptation of Graham Winston's cherished novels and continued from the 1970s television series starring Robin Ellis and Angharad Rees.
A Teenage Role in a Classic Saga
Reilly was approximately 19 years old when she took on the role of Clowance Poldark, daughter of Demelza (Mel Martin) and Ross (John Bowe). Alongside her brother Jeremy Poldark (Ioan Gruffudd), the character navigated conflict and difficulties within their household.
The film drew from Winston's eighth instalment in his Poldark series, The Stranger from the Sea. The narrative centred on Jeremy rescuing a man from the ocean, only for this mysterious figure to introduce both romance and peril to the family's home.
A Pilot That Didn't Take Off
In the film, Reilly displays cascading red hair and a temperament comparable to her mother Demelza. The production was intended to function as a pilot; however, it proved unsuccessful, and any subsequent instalments were abandoned.
Nearly two decades later, the BBC commissioned a fresh adaptation of Poldark starring Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson, which proved enormously successful and ran for five seasons.
Career After Poldark
Beyond the 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, the BBC's original Poldark series stood as the most popular BBC costume drama. Though the 1996 film failed to capture fresh attention, Reilly's professional trajectory continued to flourish with smaller roles in productions including Rebecca, Sharm, and Pie in the Sky.
Film opportunities later materialised in Maybe Baby, Dead Bodies and The Libertine. Among her most notable roles came in Joe Wright's 2006 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, where she embodied the scheming Caroline Bingley alongside Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen. This performance led to appearances in Mrs Henderson Presents, Eden Lake and Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes franchise.
During the late 2000s, Reilly returned to television in Above Suspicion, HBO's True Detective and Sky's Britannia. She reached an entirely fresh audience through her depiction of Beth in Yellowstone, a role she has inhabited since 2018. She currently stars in the follow-up series Dutton Ranch, which premiered earlier this year and is set to return for another run following a cliffhanger ending.
