Dieter Brummer, best known for playing Shane Parrish in the Australian soap opera Home and Away, died aged 45 in July 2021. The actor portrayed the character for four years, from 1992 to 1996, during which time his on-screen romance with fellow Summer Bay teenager Angel, who later became his wife, became one of the show's most-watched storylines.
Fans devastated by Shane's on-screen death
Fans described Shane's Home and Away demise in 1996 as "gut-wrenching". The character died in his wife Angel's arms after developing septicaemia from cutting himself on a wire on their first wedding anniversary.
When leaving Home and Away, Dieter stated he believed his character Shane had exhausted its potential. Speculation also circulated regarding a rift with his on-screen wife Angel, played by Melissa George.
Chemistry claims and career change
He told Woman's Day: "We may have been love interests on the show but the chemistry was far from real! Mel was incredibly ambitious right from the outset. I think she wanted to be the next Kylie Minogue. She was a big fan and she aspired to be a big star just like Kylie. I don't think she had much time for the cast of Home and Away."
Melissa subsequently confirmed to Home and Away special Endless Summer that tensions had existed in their professional partnership. "There was a lot of pressure on us," she explained. "We had to look like the perfect darling couple in public."
Their co-star Ray Meagher, who played Alf Stewart, remarked: "I'm not sure that they got on personally 100 per cent, 100 per cent of the time."
Following his departure from the show, Dieter pursued a dramatic career shift and established his own business as a high-rise window cleaner. Having been in the public eye since the age of 15, the actor revealed he wished to spend time reconnecting with his mates and "having a laugh".
Return to acting and tragic death
He said: "It was a pretty intense time coming out of high school to receive all this fame and adulation. I was so busy as a teenager I didn't get to join friends on trips or do a lot of the things my friends got to do. I spent the early part of my 20s catching up on a few years that I'd missed out on.
"As great as it was I wanted to prove to myself I could get my hands dirty and sweat for a buck as easily as standing around on set, being primped and preened. People say that I'm just a window cleaner, in reality it's substantially more involved than that. Working at heights it's a relatively specialist trade."
Nevertheless, his break from acting proved short-lived, and in 2011 he joined the cast of rival Australian soap Neighbours, playing villainous Troy Miller. Dieter also took on the role of corrupt police officer Trevor Haken in the crime drama Underbelly.
In July 2021, officers attended Dieter's residence following an emergency call. He was discovered deceased.
Tributes from family and colleagues
His family released a statement at the time, saying: "We lost our handsome, talented, funny, complicated and beloved Dieter on Saturday morning. He has left a massive hole in our lives and our world will never be the same."
The Seven Network, which broadcasts Home and Away in Australia, expressed being "deeply saddened" by the news and stated: "Dieter was a much-loved Home and Away cast member and celebrated by Australian and international audiences."
Dieter's former colleague Emily Symons, who portrayed Marilyn Chambers on Home and Away, posted on Instagram: "I can't believe this absolutely tragic news." Lynne McGranger, who portrayed Irene Roberts, posted on X: "So very sad. Please reach out. Ask if people are doing okay. And tell someone if YOU'RE not okay! Yell over the fence, call, message, Facebook, whatever it takes."
Despite speculation of a strained relationship, Melissa George also paid an emotional tribute to her former colleague. Speaking to the Something To Talk About podcast, the actress revealed why she continues watching Home and Away, saying: "I do watch often because obviously Dieter's no longer with us, which is just a devastation beyond comprehension.
"That's just too many years of him suffering that was overlooked. It really breaks my heart because he was a beautiful man. It's very sad. I'm not one to step out or make comments that people are gonna use for years to come. I've already done that and suffered the consequences. But I sort of kept silent.
"Shane and Angel was everything. I did rewatch the scene when he passed away on the rock on the beach – the final scene of Shane – and it was absolutely heartbreaking."
