Heaton in Newcastle has been named the 7th coolest neighbourhood in the UK for 2026 by Time Out. The world-renowned publication placed the area in its top 10, with Govanhill in Glasgow topping the list.
Time Out describes Heaton as "the Toon's current gastronomical place-to-be", giving its swankier (and historically cooler) neighbours Ouseburn and Jesmond a run for their money. The publication had previously championed Ouseburn.
Heaton's food and drink scene
Chillingham Road, Heaton's most famous street, is bustling with places to eat and drink, including The New Greek, Mother Mercy, Handsome Sandwich, Flint, The Barn Door and Eatflix, Newcastle's first 5D cinema. Eatflix, after a successful first year, is expanding to Tynemouth to open in the famous Plaza buildings.
Heaton is also home to Smoke & Sear, a popular brunch spot known for "the best" steak and eggs in Newcastle. The area also has its own park and annual Pride event, which made a successful debut in 2025.
Recent changes in the area
Earlier this week, two of Heaton's highest rated restaurants, Paros and Nest, announced they were closing, with customers rushing to show support to the respective teams.
Newcastle as a whole has seen recognition for its pubs, bars and restaurants, and has been chosen to host both the MOBO Awards and the Mercury Prize in the last 18 months. The Mercury Prize ceremony returns to Tyneside next week.
