Bodnant Garden in Tal-y-Bont, Conwy, North Wales, has been hailed as one of the 'most beautiful' National Trust gardens, especially during summer when its 80 acres burst into vibrant color. The Grade I-listed garden features formal gardens, shrub glades, meadows, woodland, dells, and aquatic gardens, all set against the backdrop of the Carneddau mountains in Eryri.
TikTok Praise for the Garden
On TikTok, user Grace, who recommends walking destinations across Wales and Britain, championed Bodnant Garden as perfect for a summer stroll. In her post caption, she wrote: 'Bodnant Gardens, one of the most tranquil places. Beautiful all year round but the best time to visit is mid May for the Laburnum arch to Early July for the rose gardens.' Her video posed the question: 'Is this the most beautiful National Trust Gardens?'
Grace's footage showcased highlights including pathways framed by trees forming a natural canopy, a tranquil pond, and breathtaking panoramas adorned with vibrant blooms.
History and Features
Created over 150 years ago, Bodnant Garden was planted with specimens gathered from distant lands. The site was originally home to the Lloyd family during James I's reign before passing to the Forbes family in the mid-18th century. The current Italianate mansion was built in 1792 by Colonel Forbes, who landscaped the parkland in the English Landscape tradition. In 1949, Henry McLaren, The 2nd Lord Aberconway, gifted the garden to the National Trust.
Today, visitors can explore exotic flora such as the Blue Poppy of the Himalayas and the Fire Bush of the Andes, along with five National Collections: Magnolia, Embothrium, Eucryphia, Rhododendron forrestii, and Bodnant Rhododendron Hybrids. The garden also houses Wales's largest collection of UK Champion Trees.
Visitor Amenities
The garden offers several tea rooms and cafes, a shop and garden centre selling gifts and plants, a play park for children, and a natural play area with a willow maze and den building space.
