Over two decades after its initial broadcast, the BBC's historical drama miniseries 'North and South' continues to captivate audiences. Adapted from Elizabeth Gaskell's 1855 Victorian novel, the show first aired in 2004 and features Daniela Denby-Ashe and Richard Armitage in lead roles.
A Tale of Two Worlds
The story follows Margaret Hale, played by Denby-Ashe, who is compelled to abandon her comfortable life in the rural South of England when her father resigns as a clergyman. The family relocates to the industrial town of Milton in the North, where Margaret struggles to adapt to the harsh realities of factory life.
Her world is further disrupted when she encounters cotton mill owner John Thornton, portrayed by Richard Armitage. Their initial clashes give way to a slow-burning romance that fans argue rivals Jane Austen's 'Pride and Prejudice'.
Lasting Impact
To mark the 20th anniversary of the series two years ago, Armitage reflected on the role's significance. On Instagram, he shared a photo of his character touching Margaret's face and wrote: "I'm giving all of the 2004 BBC adaptation of 'North and South' family, friends, and fans, a big smacker on the lips today to say thank you for the last 20 years of love and support. Thornton was a career-changing role and one that I'll never forget."
Fan Praise
Viewers have enthusiastically compared the series to 'Pride and Prejudice'. One fan commented: "It is amazing...acting, scenery, story, etc. It is simply mesmerising. I read the book after watching the series and personally liked the series better."
Another added: "This is one of the best, if not the best period miniseries to come out of Britain in recent years. Being an avid Pride and Prejudice (and Colin Firth fan), this is better."
A third viewer noted: "Fantastic. Absolutely gorgeous period drama! As a huge fan of the BBC's Pride and Prejudice, this has quickly become my favourite! Accurate casting, fantastic costumes, authentic settings and the soundtrack really add to the quality of the series. It has all the passion that Pride and Prejudice (Bless it!) lacks."
Romantic moments also drew praise. One fan said: "I love it! I absolutely adore 95 Pride and Prejudice, but the kiss at the end always slightly disappointed me. It must be a bit tricky in a moving carriage. North and South kisses are just heaven!!"
Another agreed: "THAT KISS LIVES RENT FREE IN MY HEAD. The North & South one, the Pride & Prejudice one, is just okay."
'North and South' is currently available to stream on Channel 4 and U.
