The UK Government has named 34 Welsh employers, including nurseries, care providers, pubs, cafes and pharmacies, for failing to pay workers the national minimum wage. The businesses have been made to repay staff in full and pay fines.
Nationwide, 658 employers were listed and shamed for underpaying workers, with around £4 million returned to more than 27,000 employees who had been denied the pay they were legally owed. Penalties totalling £7 million were issued to the responsible employers.
Largest underpayments in Wales
Among the Welsh employers, Butterflies Day Nursery in Tredegar failed to pay the greatest total amount, owing over £16,000 to four workers. Castle Leisure Limited, trading as Castle Bingo in Cardiff, owed money to the most workers, with just over £3,000 unpaid to 204 employees.
Oakville Care Limited, trading as Romilly Nursing Home in Cardiff, also failed to pay more than 100 workers correctly. Other notable names include Glamorgan Quality Meats Ltd in Rhoose, which failed to pay £14,988.46 to one worker, and Powred Heating Components Limited in Cardiff, which owed £11,864.80 to five workers.
Current minimum wage rates
Firms are currently required to pay over-21s £12.71 an hour. Workers aged 18 to 20 are entitled to £10.85 an hour, and the minimum for under-18s and apprentices is £8.
Business secretary Jonathan Reynolds said: "The best businesses know that looking after your workers isn't just the right thing to do, it's the smart thing to do, building the stronger, more successful businesses that drive growth in every postcode. Short-changing your staff isn't a shortcut to success and we are determined to stamp it out."
