Archive photos show generations of Liverpool and Everton fans

The ECHO has released a collection of archive photographs celebrating the lives, traditions and passion of Liverpool and Everton supporters through the decades. The images, drawn from the newspaper's archives and Mirrorpix, span from the 1950s to the 2000s, offering a visual record of Merseyside football culture.

Istanbul comeback and 1991 fan culture

Highlights include photographs by ECHO photographer Colin Lane taken in Istanbul, where Liverpool produced one of the greatest comebacks in football history. On May 25, 2005, Rafa Benitez's side fought back from 3-0 down against AC Milan before winning on penalties to lift the Champions League.

The collection also features photographs taken in 1991 by photographer Richard Davis, who spent much of that season documenting football supporters from across the North West for his book Football With Attitude. His work captured the fashion, music and matchday culture around fans of Liverpool, Everton and other clubs at a time when the game looked very different from today.

From the stands to the pitch

Davis's photographs have since appeared in the Going to the Match 1991 photo zine by Lower Block, as well as a new exhibition, offering a snapshot of football culture more than three decades ago. He said: "My only regret is I didn't take more photos at the time."

Images courtesy of the ECHO's archive and Mirrorpix take readers further back in time, with photographs spanning the 1950s to the 2000s. From supporters in the stands and scenes around the grounds to players on the pitch, club staff and memorable Merseyside derbies, the pictures chart the changing face of football in Liverpool and Everton across the generations.
