Strictly Judges Secure Tribute for Ann Widdecombe
Strictly Come Dancing judges Craig Revel Horwood and Anton Du Beke have reportedly asked show bosses to air a tribute to former contestant Ann Widdecombe, following her death at the age of 78. The tribute, expected to be a montage of her best moments from the 2010 series, will be broadcast when the new season returns next month.
Widdecombe, a former Conservative minister, was found dead at her home in Haytor, Dartmoor, at around 11:40am on Thursday, July 9, after sustaining serious injuries. She had appeared on the BBC dance show in 2010, partnered with then-professional dancer Anton Du Beke. The pair became fan favorites for their comic routines and affectionate banter.
Montage of Memorable Moments
A source told the Sun: "Ann is a Strictly legend. Craig and Anton were keen to flag the idea to producers who agreed viewers would love to revisit Ann’s special moments. Bosses are likely to air a montage." The tribute is set to honor her legacy on the show, which endeared her to millions of viewers.
Since the news of her death, tributes have poured in from celebrities and friends. Anton Du Beke shared a video tribute on Friday, saying: "Hi, my loves. The saddest of news I've heard today of the passing of the lovely Ann Widdecombe. I have to tell you, I had the most brilliant time with Ann on Strictly Come Dancing. She became a real friend. She was fun, she was upbeat, she was positive, she was supportive. She was game - she wanted to enter into the spirit of the whole thing and we had an incredible time together and we stayed firm friends."
Craig Revel Horwood's Personal Tribute
Craig Revel Horwood also paid tribute, sharing a photo of the pair in panto costume. He wrote: "After Ann’s time on Strictly Come Dancing, I had the privilege of working with her for several years on theatre tours and a variety of other projects. During that time, I came to know a woman who bore little resemblance to many of the assumptions I had once made about her. I grew to admire and care for her enormously. Anne was warm, wickedly funny, deeply intelligent, and a genuinely joyous presence to be around. Beneath the formidable public persona was a kind and generous spirit, and someone I am proud to have called a friend. What happened to her is unimaginably cruel. No one deserves such a horrific end. Rest in peace, darling Ann. You will be greatly missed."
Wider Reactions
Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garroway also shared her condolences on Anton's video, writing: "Darling Anton - I thought of you the second I heard the utterly sad news. I know you brought so much joy to her life and everyone could see how much you meant to each other. Sending you and all who knew and treasured Ann so much love xx."
The new series of Strictly Come Dancing is due to return to screens next month, where the tribute montage will be aired in memory of Widdecombe's time on the show.
