British rock band Squeeze cancelled their performance hours before they were due on stage after a worker was crushed to death under their tour bus. The group was scheduled to play at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Virginia, America, on Friday (September 4).
Police told Fox 5 DC that the worker was operating beneath the bus when a supporting apparatus failed, causing the bus to fall on him.
Statement from the band
The band released a statement confirming the cancellation of the show, which was set for Thursday night at 7.30pm local time (12:30am BST). It read: "Squeeze are deeply saddened and shocked by an incident that occurred at the venue earlier today, which resulted in the loss of a life.
"After discussions with the venue and the relevant authorities, the decision was made to cancel this evening's performance. We will work with the promoter and venue regarding the possibility of rescheduling the show and will communicate further information to ticket holders as soon as it is available. Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this tragic event."
Venue response and band background
Wolf Trap National Park also shared a statement on Facebook, saying: "There wasn't an accident involving a member of the community at Wolf Trap National Park today, tragically resulting in a loss of life. Out of respect, tonight's show has been cancelled."
Squeeze, known for hits such as Cool For Cats, Up The Junction and Labelled With Love, formed in London in the 1970s. The group is fronted by songwriters Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford and has seen more than 30 musicians and members join over the years.
