Sarah Halpenny, a 29-year-old Irish teacher from Lobinstown, County Meath, died unexpectedly in Melbourne, Australia, on Sunday, December 14. She is understood to have taken ill suddenly. Her funeral will take place next week in her hometown.
Sarah was a highly respected teacher at St Joseph's National School in Kingscourt, County Cavan. The school paid tribute to her, describing her as a person of warmth and kindness whose engaging personality lit up every room. She was instrumental in introducing the school's first Wellbeing committee and was heavily involved in sport, particularly football.
Sarah was also a talented Gaelic footballer, having represented Meath at underage levels, including as part of the 2012 Leinster U16-winning panel. Meath LGFA Chairperson Tommy Cannon praised her exceptional talent and passion for the sport.
A GoFundMe page set up to support the costs of repatriating her remains to Ireland has raised over €178,500. Sarah will lie in repose at her home on Tuesday and Wednesday from 1pm to 6pm. Removal will take place on Thursday morning, January 1, to the Church of the Holy Cross in Lobinstown for Funeral Mass at 11am, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
