Students across Sefton celebrated their A-level results today (Thursday, August 13), with many achieving excellent grades and securing places at universities across the country.
Christ the King Catholic High School and Sixth Form Centre
At Christ the King Catholic High School and Sixth Form Centre in Southport, students received their results and shared their reactions. Leke Odewade, 19, achieved a merit in health and social, a merit in business, and a distinction in medical science. He is going to John Moores University to study accounting and finance. He said: “I wasn’t expecting those results. I’m grateful to god and well, I just can’t believe it.”
Mateusz Lakomiec achieved a C in business, a C in PE, and a D in biology. He will study accounting and finance at Edge Hill University and plans to celebrate by going to Liverpool with his friends. He said: “I’m so happy and proud.”
Dominika Hajda, 18, received an A* in sociology, a B in chemistry, a B in biology, and a B in maths. She is going to the University of Liverpool to study biochemistry. She told the ECHO: “I was very surprised because I’ve been anxious the whole summer about whether I did well or if I completely failed. It’s been a massive relief to open them.” She added that she would be celebrating by “chilling and not stressing anymore”.
Identical twins achieve almost identical grades
Identical twin brothers Ben and Sam Tweddell, 19, discovered they had achieved almost exactly the same grades. Ben, who is going on to study Criminology and Sociology at Edge Hill University, said: “Wow.” as he opened his results. He achieved a Distinction in Business, an A* in his Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), an A in Sociology and a B in Law. He added: “I feel amazing.”
Twin brother Sam, who will study Geography also at Edge Hill, achieved a Distinction in Business and an A in his EPQ, alongside an A* in Sociology and a B in Psychology. He said: “This is so good.” The pair said that growing up and going through school together had been a huge source of support. Ben said: “It’s fun because you can joke with a teacher sometimes.” Sam added: “It’s made it easier to have support through school.”
School leaders praise students
Helen Cunningham, Assistant Headteacher at Christ the King, said: “We're absolutely delighted overall with results. We’re really pleased. 76% of our cohort have got A* to C, 22% A* to A. We're just delighted with all of our students. This day is one of the most rewarding days for teachers because you get a lot of slack from September to July, but when you come in, and you see these students, and they're delighted, and they're getting where they want to be, that is what makes the job as a teacher, really. We're delighted for everybody.”
Elsewhere, Formby High School is also celebrating an excellent set of A-level and applied/vocational results. Among this year's highlights, 53% of A-level students achieved AAB or better, 21% of all entries achieved A* or A grades, 57% of all A-level entries were graded B or above, 85% of entries achieved a grade C or above, and 99% of entries achieved a pass grade. Vocational qualifications achieved excellent outcomes, with the vast majority securing merit grades or higher. Two-thirds of students are progressing to their first-choice destinations.
Headteacher Alex Wood said: “We are immensely proud of our students and all they have achieved. These results are the culmination of years of hard work, determination, and commitment, and they reflect the ambition that characterises our Sixth Form community. It is particularly pleasing to see so many students progressing to their first-choice destinations and embarking on exciting next steps. Whether moving on to leading universities, apprenticeships, or employment, our students have bright futures ahead of them and deserve to be hugely proud of their achievements. I would also like to thank our dedicated staff and supportive families, whose encouragement, expertise, and partnership have played a vital role in helping our students achieve their goals.”
