School's All-Day Phone Ban Praised by Parents

Sandwich Technology School in Kent has introduced a strict new policy banning all students from using mobile phones anywhere on site, declaring itself 'mobile-free'. The school will confiscate phones for 24 hours if any pupil is caught with a device, with parents required to collect confiscated phones during school hours.

The policy aims to support student well-being, social skills, academic performance, and behaviour, according to the school. It was announced on Facebook ahead of the new term, sparking hundreds of comments from parents.

Some parents have praised the move, with one father calling it 'the most sensible mobile phone rule I have seen'. He argued that children can use phones before and after school, and confiscation is the child's own fault. Another supporter noted that kids are 'addicted to their phones' and the ban encourages real social interaction.

However, other parents expressed concerns about safety. One mother wrote that phones provide 'peace of mind' for parents, especially regarding transport issues, bullying, or stranger danger. She said confiscating phones beyond the school day is 'short sighted'. Another parent questioned the school's duty of care, suggesting a secure storage area during lessons instead.

The school has asked parents to reinforce the policy and remind children to respect the code of conduct. The debate highlights the ongoing tension between reducing screen time and ensuring student safety.
