Queen Camilla Hosts Glittering Literary Reception to Honour Reading Champions

In a grand celebration of literature, Queen Camilla gathered with royalty and a constellation of stars at Clarence House in London to recognise the unsung heroes of reading across the United Kingdom. The event, a literacy reception, served as the launchpad for filming a new BBC documentary that will explore the life-transforming power of books, drawing on personal experiences from the Queen and her late father.

Royal and Celebrity Guests Unite for Literacy Cause

King Charles and the Duchess of Gloucester joined Queen Camilla to meet the finalists of The Queen's Reading Room Medal, an award dedicated to individuals who have passionately promoted books and literature within their communities. The star-studded guest list was a who's who of literary and entertainment figures, including acclaimed authors such as Sir Ben Okri, Jojo Moyes, Richard Osman, and Lee Child, alongside Hollywood icons like Sigourney Weaver and Stanley Tucci. Other notable attendees were Jeffrey Archer, Derek Jacobi, and Robert Harris, all packed into the historic Clarence House to support the cause.

Queen's Reading Room Initiative Gains Momentum

Queen Camilla originally launched the Duchess of Cornwall's Reading Room in 2021, a project aimed at celebrating the profound impact of literature. It has since evolved into The Queen's Reading Room, growing into a significant online community that the Queen described in a speech as achieving success "beyond anyone's wildest dreams, especially mine!" Sigourney Weaver, the celebrated actress, expressed her enthusiasm by revealing she has signed up for the Queen's Reading Room newsletter and is currently reading The Far Pavilions by M M Kay, a book recommended by the Queen herself. Weaver emphasised the importance of reading, stating, "Reading is everything. I wouldn't have a career if I wasn't a reader," and expressed shock at recent statistics showing only half of UK adults read a book annually.

Announcement of Major BBC Documentary

During the reception, Queen Camilla announced a partnership with the BBC and Blink Films for a major new documentary. The film will showcase how books can transform lives, incorporating stories from the Queen and her father, Bruce Shand, who was a voracious reader and published a memoir about his World War II experiences. Camilla fondly recalled him as "probably the best-read man I've come across anywhere." The documentary is set to mark the UK-wide National Year of Reading in 2026 and will be produced in collaboration with The Open University, with cameras already rolling at the palace event.

Medals Awarded to Reading Heroes

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of The Queen's Reading Room Medals. Selina Brown was honoured as the 'National Reading Hero' for founding the Black British Book Festival, recognised as Europe's largest celebration of black literature. Queen Camilla congratulated her, saying, "Many congratulations." Additionally, Liz Waterland received a medal as 'Local Reading Hero' for her dedicated volunteering at Deepings Community Library in Lincolnshire, with the Queen praising her efforts as "Fantastic job. You are so brilliant." The event also featured displays of literary treasures, including a copy of Arthur Conan Doyle's How Watson Learned the Trick from Queen Mary's Doll's House at Windsor Castle, along with early editions of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Broad Support from Literary Community

The reception underscored the widespread support for literacy initiatives, with guests like Reeta Chakrabarti, Tan Twan Eng, and Ann Cleeves in attendance. Queen Camilla engaged in conversations with many, including historian Adam Zamoyski and actress Selina Cadell, further highlighting the collaborative spirit of the literary world. This event not only celebrated individual achievements but also reinforced the critical role of reading in education and personal development, setting a hopeful tone for future efforts to boost literacy rates across the nation.
