Birkenhead Sixth Form College has achieved a record set of A-Level results, with 94% of students offered a university place. Principal Rob Myatt described the performance as having "blown it out the park," surpassing last year's record and taking the college to "new heights."
Top achievers celebrate
Among those celebrating was Jack Chesters, who secured A*AAA and will study environmental sciences at Edinburgh. Chisom Ugwu, who achieved A*AAB, will study medicine at Keele University. She told the ECHO: "I'm really proud of myself and I'm so excited to go to uni in September. The application process wasn't easy but I'm so glad that I made it in the end."
Principal praises students and staff
Rob Myatt said: "I'm really delighted today for our students. They have blown it out the park. Last year was a record, this year they've taken us to new heights with many of them going off to their first choice universities and apprenticeships as well. There are exciting times ahead them and we're really proud of our students. It's testament to the dedication and commitment of our staff as well. Well done the class of 2026, you've done us proud!"
The college also provided a generous breakfast spread for students, staff, and journalists.
Other Wirral schools report strong outcomes
At South Wirral High School, 100% of university applicants secured places. Headteacher Mike Cloherty praised students: "These results reflect the determination, independence, and ambition our students have demonstrated during their time at South Wirral, embodying our school values and especially our belief in high achievement through ambition. They have applied themselves with focus, supported one another, and faced every challenge with resilience – and today’s successes are the reward for that effort. I am proud not just of what they have achieved academically, but of the considerate, respectful young people they have grown into. I am confident they will make a positive impact in whichever direction their future takes them."
Birkenhead School also celebrated, with nearly a sixth of grades at A and 76% at A or B. Head of Seniors Tom Whitworth said: "Birkenhead School is not a school driven by data, nor the hot-headed pursuit of grades at all costs; instead, we believe in students being inspired both in the classroom, and in their sporting, creative and wider co-curricular pursuits where so many life skills are learnt and friendships gained. Today’s results are testament to this philosophy, to the hard work of the students and to the professionalism and talents of all staff. I also wish to pay tribute to our families who trust in the school, and whose teamwork with us over so many years leads to deserved outcomes like today’s. I truly believe that an investment in a child’s education is the very best investment families can ever make, and a Birkenhead School education is one where we are committed to all-round excellence, and balance."
Calday Grange Grammar School also reported strong grades. Headteacher Stephen Gray said: "It has been great to see so many happy faces here at Calday Grange Grammar School, as our A-Level students collected their results. There were some incredible personal achievements, and I am proud of our students and thank our dedicated staff and the parents/carers who have worked with us to make this happen. I am delighted with the overall school results and our outcomes remain strong. Our average grade is a 'B' and twenty-eight students achieved three or more A*-A grades. Our students are now leaving us and going on to their respective destinations of choice, and this includes university, gap years and degree-level apprenticeships. Whatever their destination, we send our best wishes for the future."
At St Mary’s Catholic College, Wallasey, head of sixth form Mrs Sarah Witan said: "It has been wonderful to welcome our students back into school to recognise their efforts and celebrate all they have achieved, both academically and personally. The results students have received today are a true reflection of the dedication and commitment they have demonstrated during their two years of study, and are so very well deserved. I am incredibly proud of each and every one of them, and wish them all the luck and success as they prepare to begin the next exciting chapter in their journey."
