UK Schools Shut as Heat Dome Brings Near-40C Temperatures

Hundreds of schools across the UK are closing completely or partially as a heat dome settles over western Europe, bringing temperatures that could approach 40C by Wednesday. The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for extreme heat spanning from London to Swansea and Somerset to Birmingham, in effect from 9am Wednesday to 9pm Thursday.

The June record of 35.6C set in Hampshire in 1976 is expected to be eclipsed, and temperatures could approach the UK's all-time record of 40.3C recorded in July 2022. Tuesday's peak temperature reached 34.6C in Wisley, Surrey, according to the Met Office.

Red Warning and Record-Breaking Heat

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: "The Met Office is flagging 39C as a headline maximum temperature on Thursday, most likely for somewhere in London or the South East. It is possible we could see temperatures higher than the 39C if the final values are at the upper end of our narrow range." He added that high humidity would make the intense heat even harder to endure.

Overnight temperatures in St Athan, South Glamorgan, remained above 20.3C on Monday, setting a new June record for Wales. The Met Office confirmed that parts of England and Wales did not drop below 20C, leading to "tropical nights" that make sleep uncomfortable.

Impact on Schools and Vulnerable Populations

Age UK warned that the scorching conditions pose a "dangerous time for older people," with figures showing those aged 75 and above made up roughly nine in 10 heat-related fatalities in England last summer. The heat is also causing significant disruption for parents as schools shut or finish early to protect pupils.

Some 100 schools in Somerset will remain closed over the coming three days, with the overwhelming majority fully shut on Wednesday and Thursday, Somerset Council confirmed. Around 100 schools will also be at least partially shut in Buckinghamshire, alongside 86 schools in Gloucestershire.
