Multiple schools and nurseries across Greater Manchester are closing early today (Thursday, 25 June 2026) as a record-breaking heatwave continues to affect the UK. Temperatures in the region are expected to reach 33°C, prompting safety measures.
Over 1,200 Schools Closed Nationwide
More than 1,200 schools across the country are either fully or partially closed today, according to reports. The extreme heat, caused by a 'heat-dome' over Europe, has led to exceptionally hot and humid conditions. In Greater Manchester, while no official council-wide closures have been confirmed, individual schools have taken action.

Wigan Schools Adapt Hours
A number of schools in Wigan are implementing 'adapted hours' during the heatwave. A spokesperson for Wigan Council said: "A number of local schools are taking measures during this heatwave, including adapted hours, and implementing optional early pick-ups to manage and keep pupils safe."
Government Advice
The Department for Education has issued guidance stating that 'during hot weather, we don't normally advise schools to close'. However, individual schools have discretion. Children have been told they can wear PE kit instead of full uniform, and some after-school clubs have been cancelled.
