A man has been arrested in the UK on suspicion of murdering a British holidaymaker in Greece. Jacqueline Causton, 66, from Bawtry near Doncaster, was found unresponsive at a villa on the Greek island of Zakynthos, also known as Zante.
She was taken to Zakynthos General Hospital without a pulse and was later pronounced dead. Greek media reported that the tourist was found in a swimming pool of a rented villa in the Marathias area of Keri. Someone at the property reportedly administered CPR before paramedics arrived on the afternoon of May 14.
Investigation and arrest
Police officers were also at the villa as an investigation was launched by Greek authorities. Ms Causton's body has since been brought back to the UK. An inquest opening at Doncaster Coroner's Court has now heard that a man was initially arrested on suspicion of murder on June 12. He was released on bail but has now been arrested again, after police discovered "fresh evidence".
South Yorkshire Police has confirmed that the suspect is 69 and was arrested in Worcestershire. No charge has been announced. The Crown Prosecution Service has not yet decided whether the investigation will ultimately be led by authorities in Britain or Greece.
Cause of death undetermined
No official cause of Ms Causton's death has been disclosed. Initial reports in Greece said investigators were examining whether her death had resulted from drowning or a medical episode, with a post-mortem examination expected to help establish the cause. Those possibilities were reported before the British murder investigation and no conclusion has been publicly announced.
Area coroner Louise Slater adjourned the proceedings until February 2027, when the court is expected to receive an update. The investigation remains ongoing.
