JJ Gabriel can now make his Premier League debut for Manchester United after meeting the competition's age eligibility rules, but he still faces three club restrictions.
Age eligibility cleared
The 15-year-old forward was previously barred from top-flight action because players must turn 15 on or before August 31 of a given season to be eligible. Born on October 6, 2010, Gabriel was 14 at the August 2025 cutoff and missed last season.
Now that he turns 16 in October 2026, he meets the academic year requirement for the 2026/27 campaign, making him legally eligible for a Premier League debut. He has been on the club's pre-season tour and is viewed as a promising attacker by the club and manager Michael Carrick.
Debut already made
Gabriel made his unofficial debut in United's pre-season friendly win against Atletico Madrid earlier this month, coming on as a substitute for Bryan Mbeumo in the 82nd minute. He became the youngest player ever to feature for the first team.
Despite his eligibility, he must abide by three strict rules.
Three restrictions
First, he is prohibited from wearing the club's new training kit sponsored by gambling company Betway, due to gambling restrictions. United recently signed a £20 million-per-year agreement with Betway, and the firm now features on United's training wear. Gabriel, like all under-18 players in the Premier League, cannot wear apparel promoting gambling companies.
The deal was struck despite the top flight's forthcoming rule for the 2026/27 season banning betting firms from front-of-shirt sponsorships. The regulation was agreed in April 2023, but does not stop betting companies from appearing on shirt sleeves, training kits, or in stadiums.
Second, Gabriel is barred from using United's first-team dressing rooms. Premier League regulations require players under 18 to change in a separate area from the senior squad during training and matches. He can enter the dressing room only after his team-mates have changed, so manager Carrick can deliver his team talk.
Third, he cannot sign a professional contract until his 17th birthday on October 6, 2027. Until then, he remains on youth terms.
