In Australia, new online safety laws introduced in March require mandatory age verification checks for R18+ content. The most common ID used is a driver's licence, meaning gamers may need a valid licence to play GTA 6, especially its online multiplayer mode.

The issue may not stay in Australia. Several nations have signalled similar measures, including the UK. In June 2026, then-prime minister Sir Keir Starmer announced plans for a social media ban for under-16s, expected in spring 2027, along with an overnight app curfew for under-18s. France has also approved a ban preventing children under 15 from opening social media accounts from September 1.
Australia already requires R18+ content to verify users are adults, and the government has doubled penalties for non-compliant companies. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said tech firms are "not doing enough" to protect children online.
