Central defence has become a problem area after L'Equipe reported William Saliba could be sidelined for four to five months with a back issue. Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa is a possible target but carries a £50-60 million price tag, which is excessive for cover. A more astute alternative would be John Stones, who departed Manchester City on a free transfer. Stones would provide experienced rotation with Cristian Mosquera until Saliba returns.
