Morgan Geyser, now 21, has been released from a psychiatric hospital nearly a decade after she and her friend Anissa Weier lured their 12-year-old classmate into the woods and stabbed her 19 times in a chilling attempt to appease the fictional horror character Slender Man.
The horrific attack, which took place in Waukesha, Wisconsin, in 2014, shocked the nation due to its bizarre motive and the young age of the perpetrators. Geyser, who was just 12 at the time, was sentenced to 40 years in a mental health facility after pleading guilty to attempted first-degree intentional homicide.
A Decade Behind Bars
After spending her formative years in institutional care, Geyser has now been deemed fit for conditional release. Reports indicate she will transition into supervised community living, though under strict monitoring due to the severity of her crime.
The Slender Man Phenomenon
The case highlighted the disturbing influence of online horror folklore on vulnerable young minds. Slender Man, a faceless bogeyman created for an internet meme, became the twisted inspiration for the brutal attack that left the victim miraculously surviving despite near-fatal injuries.
What's Next for Geyser?
While released from the psychiatric hospital, Geyser remains under court supervision until 2042. Mental health professionals will continue to monitor her progress as she attempts to reintegrate into society - a controversial decision that has divided public opinion.
The victim, now in her early 20s, continues to live with physical and emotional scars from the attack. Meanwhile, Weier, the other perpetrator, was released in 2021 after serving time in a juvenile facility.
