Joao Palhinha, the midfielder whose decisive goal secured Tottenham Hotspur's Premier League survival on the final day of the season, is reportedly keen on a return to Sporting CP. Despite Spurs holding the option to make his loan move from Bayern Munich permanent, the 30-year-old appears to have his sights set on a move back to his former club.
Palhinha's strike in a 1-0 victory over Everton on the final day confirmed Tottenham's top-flight status, sending West Ham United down to the Championship despite their own 3-0 win over Leeds United. The goal cemented his status as a hero among the Spurs faithful, but with the campaign now over, attention has turned to the summer transfer window and the midfielder's future.
Palhinha's preference for Sporting CP
According to reports from Portuguese outlet A Bola, Tottenham have the option to sign Palhinha permanently from Bayern Munich for a fee of €30 million (£25.9m). However, any potential deal hinges on the player's approval, and it is understood that Palhinha has been in advanced talks with Sporting CP regarding a return to the club where he began his career.
The report suggests that negotiations between Palhinha and Sporting have been progressing smoothly, and the midfielder deliberately delayed informing Tottenham of his desire to leave until the club's Premier League status was confirmed. This strategic timing allowed him to focus on the crucial final fixture without distraction.
Manager's desire to keep Palhinha
When asked about his wish to retain Palhinha for the upcoming season, Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi expressed a clear desire to keep the Portuguese international at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. "Yes, I would like to keep him, 100 per cent," De Zerbi said. "We have to start from these people. Before we speak about the players, we have to speak about the people. And we have to start. Then, I can't give the place for everyone in the first eleven. Because I want to build two players in each position. But for sure, I would like him to stay with me. Like Conor Gallagher and Rodrigo Bentancur, the same."
Palhinha's impact this season has been significant, with the midfielder featuring 45 times across all competitions, scoring seven goals and registering three assists. His performances have been a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing campaign for Spurs, who finished safely above the relegation zone but fell short of their ambitions.
Palhinha's career journey
The 30-year-old began his career in Sporting CP's youth academy, eventually making 95 appearances for the senior side. He secured a permanent transfer to Fulham in 2022, where he impressed before moving to Bayern Munich two years later. His loan spell at Tottenham has further showcased his abilities, making him a sought-after asset this summer.
As the summer transfer window approaches, the decision now rests with Palhinha. While Tottenham are eager to secure his services permanently, his heart appears to be set on a return to Sporting CP, where he could continue his career in familiar surroundings.
