X Factor star Danny Tetley released from prison after child sex crimes

Former X Factor contestant Danny Tetley has been released from prison after serving six years for sexually abusing seven teenage boys. The 44-year-old singer was sentenced in 2020 to nine years in custody as part of an extended 14-year sentence, but was freed after serving two-thirds of the custodial term.

Details of the Offences

Tetley admitted to seven charges of causing sexual exploitation and two counts of distributing indecent images. The offences involved boys aged between 14 and 16. A prosecutor stated that Tetley offered his victims 'hundreds of pounds' in exchange for sexualised images and videos. The abuse came to light when a parent of one victim checked his phone after noticing unusual spending.

Tetley reached the semi-finals of The X Factor in 2018 and used his television fame to groom his victims. During sentencing at Bradford Crown Court in 2020, Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC described Tetley's behaviour as 'highly predatory and manipulative' and said he had 'traded on his standing as a television star.'

Sentence and Release

Tetley was originally handed an extended sentence of 17 years, but this was reduced to 14 years on appeal, comprising nine years in custody and a five-year extended license period. The Ministry of Justice confirmed his release, with a spokesperson telling The Mirror: 'These were horrific crimes and our thoughts remain with the victims. Offenders whose release is directed by the independent Parole Board are supervised by the Probation Service and are subject to strict conditions, including restrictions on their movements and contact with others. They can be recalled to prison for breaching these conditions or exhibiting behaviour suggesting they pose an increased risk to the public.'

Defence and Impact

Tetley's defence lawyer, Andrew Dallas, claimed the singer blamed his offending on 'the fame he could not cope with.' Dallas told the court Tetley was 'effectively alone in a very public world, emotionally vulnerable' and that by the time he was imprisoned, he was 'penniless.' He added that Tetley's motivation was solely to obtain images and that he had no interest in anything more.

Judge Hall noted the distress caused to victims, stating: 'This has been most distressing for the victims. The press are here in force for the extent of gravity of the case, the number of child victims. Your celebrity is now gone, tarnished and destroyed.' He also said grooming was at the heart of the case, adding: 'What you demanded and showed were blatant and the disgusting level to which you sank, Mr Tetley, was quite unbelievable.'
