A woman has died following a collision between a car and a heavy goods vehicle on the A1 in Northumberland. The incident occurred shortly after 4pm on Monday near Causey Park in the Earsdon area.
Details of the collision
Emergency services responded to reports of a two-vehicle collision involving a grey BMW 5 Series travelling southbound and a white Mercedes HGV travelling northbound. The cause of the collision has not yet been established.
Victim confirmed
Northumbria Police confirmed today that the passenger of the BMW, a woman in her 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
Road closure and investigation
A section of the A1 between the A697 junction and the Acklington junction was closed in both directions for ten hours but has since reopened. Officers from Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are investigating and appealing for witnesses, particularly those with CCTV or dashcam footage of the moments leading up to the collision.

Sergeant Greg Huntley of Northumbria Police said: "Our thoughts are firmly with the family and loved ones of the woman who has sadly died in this tragic collision. We will continue to offer them all the support they need and would ask that their privacy is respected at this time." He added: "We are now appealing for further information and for anyone with dashcam footage of the vehicles involved, to come forward. If you were travelling in either direction on the A1 around the time of this collision, any information you are able to provide could prove crucial to our enquiries."
