Deschamps rejects Man Utd manager approach as Carrick pressure mounts
Deschamps rejects Man Utd manager approach

Didier Deschamps has told Manchester United he has no interest in becoming their next manager. It is understood United bosses sounded out the former France manager about replacing Michael Carrick at Old Trafford.

Carrick is fighting to save his job after picking up just one win from their opening nine Premier League matches. Deschamps was viewed as having the winning credentials and experience to take on the challenge of restoring United to former glories. He also appealed to United because he is available for nothing.

Deschamps takes a break from football

But Deschamps, who led France to World Cup glory in 2018, has no desire to take on the poisoned chalice that is managing United. Deschamps stood down as France boss following the summer's World Cup and is taking a break from the game before weighing up his next options.

The 58-year-old hasn't been a club manager since leaving Marseille in 2012 and will continue to assess his options before taking on his next role.

Other candidates on United's radar

United's owners are also interested in appointing Unai Emery. But the Spaniard, who takes Aston Villa to Old Trafford on Sunday, is said to be close to agreeing a new and improved deal to remain at Villa Park instead.

Julian Nagelsmann has also been on United's radar but has little desire to talk to the fallen giants. While Eddie Howe remains a leading contender to replace Carrick, should he be sacked during the international break.

Carrick's position after Roma comeback

Many expected Carrick to be axed before the fortnight break, with United putting together a winless run stretching to nine games in all competitions. That run looked certain to be extended when Roma opened up a 2-0 lead in front of an increasingly toxic Old Trafford home crowd.

But United completed a stirring comeback, with Matheus Cunha scoring a dramatic late brace to ease some pressure on his manager. Speaking after their win in the Champions League, Carrick said: "I don't have a crystal ball to know what happens next. We move on to the weekend. We've got a really important game here against Aston Villa, which we need to prepare for right."
