Wigan Warriors Issue Statement After Junior Nsemba Racially Abused Online
Wigan Warriors Condemn Racist Abuse of Junior Nsemba

Wigan Warriors have issued a statement after 22-year-old player Junior Nsemba was subjected to racist comments on social media. The abuse occurred after Wigan defeated St Helens R.F.C. at Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

Club Condemns Abuse

In a strongly worded statement, Wigan Warriors said they were "appalled" by the comments and condemned them in the strongest possible terms. The club added that the incident has been reported to the relevant authorities, including the Rugby Football League (RFL) and social media platforms.

The statement reads: “The club is aware of racist remarks made on social media about one of our players. We are appalled by the comments and condemn them in the strongest possible terms. No individual should be subjected to racist abuse, whether online, in person or in any other setting. Racism must be called out, condemned and eradicated. We will report such matters through the appropriate channels and will work with the relevant authorities, the Rugby Football League and social media platforms to ensure they are investigated and dealt with properly.”

Coach Matt Peet Responds

Warriors' coach, Matt Peet, also condemned the comments and offered support to Nsemba. He called on racism in the sport to be "stamped out" and invited those responsible to come forward. “The club will do most of the talking in a statement but as a game, as a club, we’re better than that,” Peet said. “It needs to be stamped out, it’s not something we’re about. Those people that are doing that, hiding behind phones and keyboards, our club is open to them. If any of them want to come and speak to us and Junior, they can. If these people are associated with the game, then we need to take care of it.”

Ongoing Investigation

The Rugby Football League has been approached for comment but has not yet responded. Wigan Warriors have confirmed they will cooperate fully with any investigation and will ensure the matter is dealt with properly. The club reiterated its commitment to eradicating racism from the sport.
