Warren 'AKA' Lyttle, a man in his 30s, has been named locally as the victim of a fatal fall from a Twelfth of July bonfire in east Belfast on Friday night. The incident occurred at the Braniel Eleventh Night bonfire, a traditional loyalist bonfire built ahead of the Twelfth of July celebrations.
Community Mourns as Bonfire Proceeds
In a joint statement, Braniel Bonfire Committee, Braniel Loyal Flute Band, and Braniel Community Group expressed their grief: "It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of our friend, Warren 'AKA' Lyttle, following last night's tragic accident at the Braniel Bonfire." They added that following discussions with Lyttle's family, who wished for the bonfire to proceed, organisers decided to honour that request.
The bonfire is scheduled to be lit at 9pm on Saturday 11 July. Attendees are asked to observe a minute's silence in Lyttle's memory before lighting and to disperse quietly and respectfully afterwards.
Tributes from Local Organisations
Dundela Social Club also paid tribute, stating: "The Staff, Committee, and everyone at Dundela Social Club would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Warren Lyttle (AKA), on his passing. Aka was a familiar face around the club and will be sadly missed by many."
The cause of death is under investigation, but no further details have been released by authorities. The tragedy has cast a shadow over the annual loyalist celebrations, with community leaders urging attendees to show dignity and respect.
