A tourist in China survived a dramatic 180-foot fall down a cliff face and remained trapped in a narrow rock crevice for five hours before being rescued by emergency services.
Incident Details
Ren Mou, the tourist, was walking near the edge of Jiaozi Cliff in Shanxi Province when wet conditions and poor visibility caused her to slip. She tumbled down the 330-foot-high cliff but became stuck in a small rock crevice halfway down. She had spent the night alone watching the sunrise at the site before the accident occurred.
Rescue Operation
A man at the cliff's base heard her calls for help and alerted authorities in the early hours of Thursday, July 2. Rescue teams deployed drones, including infrared imaging, to pinpoint her exact location. Due to the cliff offering no suitable anchor points, rescuers secured ropes to surrounding trees before abseiling down to reach her.
Survival and Injuries
Ren survived five hours in the rock crevice by the time she was brought to safety. She was disorientated, physically exhausted, and had sustained multiple non-life-threatening injuries. She remains in hospital receiving treatment.
Rescue Team's Perspective
The Captain of the Shanxi Blue Sky Rescue Team stated it was the first time in 16 years of service he had encountered such a situation. Visitors have been urged to avoid lingering near cliff edges at night and on slippery terrain, and to heed safety warnings.
