A 23-year-old man has been arrested and remains in police custody following a dog attack that left a toddler injured in Thornaby, North East England. The incident occurred on Thorntree Road at approximately 1:40 PM on Monday, June 8, when the young boy was set upon by a dog believed to be a German Shepherd.
Child Sustains Injuries in Attack
The toddler sustained puncture wounds and scratches across his body and was rushed to hospital via ambulance, according to Teesside Live. The attack happened near a row of local shops, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Cleveland Police confirmed that a man fled the scene with his dog but was tracked down shortly afterwards following a search by officers. The 23-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of having a dog dangerously out of control, causing injury. He remains in police custody as of Tuesday morning, June 9.
Response Chief Inspector Andy Evans stated: "We recognise that this has been an extremely distressing incident for the child and their family, and also the wider public who witnessed this incident and helped to get the dog away from the child. Our thoughts are with the family as the child recovers from the attack."
Dog Seized and Public Reassured
The dog, believed to be a German Shepherd, has been seized and taken to secure kennels. Police have assured the public that neighbourhood policing officers are patrolling the area to address any concerns.
