Leon Pafu Ngoy, an 18-year-old who had just completed his GCSE exams, has been named as the teenager who died after getting into difficulty in the River Irwell at Clifton Country Park in Salford. His devastated family released a touching tribute, warning others about the dangers of open water.
Family's Heartbreaking Tribute
In a statement released by Greater Manchester Police, Leon's family said: "Leon was our baby, our brother, our best friend and the heart of our family. He was kind, respectful, thoughtful and loved by everyone who knew him." They described him as someone who "brought energy, laughter and happiness" and noted his love for basketball, fashion, music, and spending time with family and friends.
The family emphasized that Leon's death was a "tragic accident" and that no one else was to blame. "We will always wonder what might have been if different choices had been made," they said. "If Leon had gone to the local swimming baths instead of the Clifton Country Park that day, he would still be with us."
Emergency Response and Search Operation
Emergency services were called to Clifton Country Park on Saturday, June 27, after the alarm was raised. A major search operation was launched, with crews working through to the following Monday. Tragically, the search ended when Leon's body was recovered.
The tragedy is one of several similar open water deaths in Greater Manchester during recent heatwaves, sparking renewed calls from emergency services to stay out of canals, rivers, and reservoirs.
Leon's Message: Water Safety Warning
Leon's family shared a message they believe he would want to convey: "No matter how safe the water may look, it is never worth taking the risk." They hope that by sharing his story, other families will be spared the "unimaginable pain and heartbreak" they are experiencing.
Leon was described as having "big ambitions and dreams he was looking forward to pursuing." His family thanked relatives, friends, and the community for their support during this difficult time.
