River Island has issued an urgent recall for four children's clothing items after discovering "excess" levels of cadmium in heart and bow-shaped brooches. The chemical compound is classified as "highly toxic" and can cause serious health issues, including kidney and bone disease.
Affected Items and Identification
The recalled products include a one-shoulder scuba dress in pink and red, a white crepe skort, and a white crepe top. All sizes of these items are affected. The products were sold both online and in River Island stores. Customers can check if they have an affected item by locating the product number on the care label inside the garment. A full list of product numbers is available on the River Island website.
Regulatory Breach and Health Risks
The Office for Product Safety & Standards (OPSS) stated that the garments do not meet the requirements of the REACH Regulations 2008 due to elevated cadmium levels in the brooches. According to the UK Health Security Agency, cadmium is a chemical widely distributed in the earth's crust, air, and water. While historically used in consumer and industrial materials, it is now heavily restricted by the EU. Exposure can occur through breathing or ingestion, leading to symptoms such as a metallic taste, shortness of breath, chest pain, and flu-like symptoms. In severe cases, it may cause lung damage, multiple organ failure, or death, though such outcomes are rare at typical environmental levels. Ingesting cadmium can irritate the digestive tract, causing nausea and diarrhea. Prolonged exposure "may result in damage to the kidneys and bones and may cause cancer," according to the UK Health Security Agency.
Refund Process and Customer Action
River Island has asked customers to stop using the items "immediately" and return them to any River Island store for a full refund. Alternatively, customers can contact the retailer via email at customer.services@river-island.com or by phone at 03445766444. In its recall notice, River Island said: "The casing of the brooch exceeds cadmium content legislation requirements. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused and will, of course, offer you a full refund."
This recall follows a similar action by Primark, which recently recalled three models of its pepper mill due to excess lead concentrations, also breaching REACH regulations.
