Rapist who murdered estranged wife jailed for life

Michael Thompson, 56, has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder of his estranged wife, Kimberley Thompson, whom he killed and attempted to disguise as a suicide. The incident occurred at their shared home in Northampton in the early hours of August 9 last year.

Years of abuse and control

Kimberley Thompson had endured years of domestic abuse at the hands of Michael Thompson, including controlling and coercive behaviour, as well as physical violence. Court proceedings revealed that Thompson had made hundreds of hours of audio recordings of his wife, documenting his systematic abuse.

Murder staged as suicide

On the night of the murder, Thompson suffocated Kimberley and then attempted to make her death appear to be a suicide. However, forensic evidence and his history of abuse led to his conviction. The jury rejected his claims that her death was self-inflicted.

Life sentence handed down

At Northampton Crown Court, Thompson was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 30 years. The judge described his actions as "calculated and brutal," noting the premeditated nature of the crime and the prolonged suffering he inflicted on his victim.

Detective Inspector Johnny Campbell of Northamptonshire Police stated: "Michael Thompson was a controlling and violent man who subjected Kimberley to years of abuse. He then took her life and tried to cover it up. This sentence reflects the severity of his crimes."
