Police cordon remains at plane crash scene after two killed

Police officers and vehicles remain on Old Drymen Road, where a light aircraft crash on Friday afternoon killed a 16-year-old boy and an 80-year-old man. A gate leading to a hill where the crash appears to have happened has been cordoned off.

Crash timeline and response

Emergency services were called to reports of the crash north-east of Drymen, in Stirlingshire, at around 4.45pm on Friday. The flight had taken off from Glasgow Airport shortly after 4.15pm, heading over Loch Lomond, before it stopped transmitting around 20 minutes later.

The 16-year-old boy and 80-year-old man were pronounced dead at the scene. Police Scotland confirmed on Saturday morning that their next of kin have been informed. The aircraft is believed to have been a Piper Tomahawk II.

Airspace restrictions and investigation

Temporary airspace restrictions, including drones, are in place around the village, with officers warning that it is a criminal offence to fly in restricted airspace. Restrictions are likely to remain for some time to allow the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) to conduct its investigation.

Police were pictured at the scene on Saturday ahead of the AAIB's arrival. In a statement, the AAIB said: “An investigation has begun into an accident involving a light aircraft which occurred on October 16 2026. A team has travelled to the accident site near Drymen, north of Glasgow, to make inquiries and gather evidence as part of the process of conducting a safety investigation.”
