A pensioner is fighting for life after being hit by a car in Liverpool city centre. The man, aged in his 70s, was knocked down by a black Peugeot 2008 on Hunter Street yesterday morning, Wednesday October 14. Emergency services were called just after 6am. The driver stopped at the scene and the elderly pedestrian was taken to hospital with multiple injuries. He remains in a critical condition, Merseyside Police said.
Road closed after crash
Hunter Street was closed eastbound following the crash, which happened near Byrom Street and Islington, a major junction that connects Scotland Road to the Birkenhead Tunnel and Lime Street station. The road was reopened yesterday afternoon.
Appeal for witnesses
Merseyside Police has now appealed for witnesses to come forward. Detective Sergeant Andy Roper from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "A man remains in a critical condition in hospital following this collision and our thoughts are very much with him and his loved ones.
"We are determined to establish exactly what happened and ensure he and his family have the answers they deserve.
"I am appealing to anyone who was on Hunter Street, or in the surrounding area, shortly before or at the time of the collision to come forward if they saw anything that may assist our enquiries. Even information which may seem insignificant could prove vital to our investigation.
"I would also ask drivers who were in the area to check any dashcam footage they may have captured. Both front and rear-facing cameras can often record important evidence without the driver being aware of it.
"We can provide a secure link for footage to be uploaded directly to our investigation team, and we will review all material submitted to help establish the full circumstances of this collision."
