Annette Robertson, 49, was asleep in her bed when she was woken by a knock at the door at around 3am on Monday, August 3. She was then battered by a vicious gang who stormed her property and attacked her and her 19-year-old daughter Remy, who had just returned from work at a nursing home.
The thugs and the mum had an earlier run-in after their dog bit her elderly Lhasa Apso. She claims that they burst through the door of her house in Kilmarnock before repeatedly stamping on her head and kicking her before breaking a broomstick in two to strike her with blows across her body.
Victim thought she would die
Recalling her ordeal, Annette told the Record: "I thought I was going to die. I remember thinking, if I take one more hit, that's going to be it."
"It was just blow after blow. Eventually, I played dead, hoping that they wouldn't go any further."
As the violence against Annette continued, one of the group grabbed Remy and squeezed the teenager's throat.
Annette continued: "They all seemed intoxicated. It was like they were possessed. If we were attacked by animals we might have stood a better chance."
"There was no stopping them. We were desperate to get them out of our house. There was blood everywhere and I was a complete mess."
Hospital treatment and injuries
Annette was rushed to hospital following the attack, where she spent five nights receiving treatment for her injuries. The horrifying ordeal lasted more than 20 minutes before the attackers fled the property.
A CT scan revealed she had suffered an active bleed on the brain and multiple broken ribs, while the severe bruising left her face and body badly swollen.
Annette explained that the yobs are known to her as she recalled the dog attack that had taken place a few weeks earlier. She said: "A dog that belongs to one of them bit my wee dog and we had to go to the vets. It was upsetting at the time, but I thought the issue was over and done with. We never heard anything more of it."
Family too frightened to return home
She and Remy have since left their home and are staying with their eldest daughter Tianna, 20, because they are too frightened to return.
She added: "I can't go back to my own home. It's just not possible. All I can think about is why they would want to do this to me."
"It was just a quiet Sunday night and everyone thinks they're not safe in their own home."
"Remy is also traumatised and struggling to sleep. I can't look at myself. It is nauseating seeing the injuries."
"I've still got a footprint on my chest and will be monitored for my brain injury. The pain I've felt is horrendous."
Police charge two people
Police Scotland have since charged two people in connection with the incident at Annette's home. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of an assault which took place in a property in Kilmarnock in the early hours of Monday, 3 August, 2026”
“A 49-year-old woman attended hospital for treatment. A 38-year-old man and 35-year-old woman have been arrested and charged. Reports will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
