Southport, a Merseyside seaside town, has been named the UK's most dog-friendly spot to visit with a pet. The town topped a list of coastal destinations, ahead of Llandudno and Margate, according to new research from Tails.com.
Southport tops dog-friendly rankings
The study compared destinations across 10 dog-friendly factors, including nearby beaches, walking routes, cafés, restaurants, attractions, green spaces and veterinary practices. Southport recorded a dog-friendly score of 41.90 out of 100.
The town offers 32 dog-friendly restaurants, 12 cafés, 14 vets and seven dog-friendly shopping centres, as well as a dog-friendly beach within 10 miles.
Activities for dogs and owners
Visitors can explore the sandy shores of Ainsdale Beach, walk through the pinewoods at nearby Formby, or stroll around Hesketh Park, Southport Marine Lake and the Botanic Gardens. The town's promenade provides an ideal setting for a leisurely walk, and dogs can cool off in the sea in areas where they are permitted.
After exploring, owners can relax with a coffee, lunch or evening meal at one of the area's dog-friendly cafés, pubs and restaurants.
Tips from a vet
Dr Sean McCormack, Head Vet at Tails.com, said: “A successful day out with your dog starts before you even leave the house. Make sure you’ve packed the essentials, including fresh water, a portable bowl, poo bags, a lead and enough of their usual food if you’ll be away over mealtimes.
“Keeping their routine as consistent as possible can help them stay comfortable and avoid digestive upsets.
“It’s also worth planning regular rest and water breaks, especially during warmer weather, and checking in advance that the places you’re visiting are dog-friendly. It’s a simple upgrade that helps turn these outings into even better days for both of you, making it easy to seize the day.”
