A 19-year-old man is feared dead after a kayak capsized off the coast of Northumberland near Boulmer. The incident occurred just after 9:15 pm on Tuesday, July 7, prompting a multi-agency search involving Northumbria Police, HM Coastguard, and the RNLI.
According to HM Coastguard, two men were in the water after the kayak capsized. One man managed to swim to a buoy and was rescued by the Coastguard. A search was immediately launched for the second man, but police now believe he has tragically died. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.
Police Statement
Chief Inspector Jon Caisley of Northumbria Police said: "This is a very tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the man’s loved ones at this time. We will continue to support them in any way that we can, and would ask that their privacy is respected." He added: "Searches continue but due to challenging circumstances, we are not able to provide any timescales around our efforts to recover the man. We would like to thank our colleagues with HM Coastguard and all of our partners for their continued support."
Ongoing Search Efforts
The search is being supported by HM Coastguard and the RNLI, with resources including lifeboats from Amble, Tynemouth, Craster, and Seahouses. Members of the public are asked not to conduct their own searches, allowing trained professionals to continue the operation.
