Man dies in Stockport after suspected fall from bridge

A man died in Stockport town centre on Friday night following a suspected fall from height. Chestergate was taped off by police, with a forensic tent placed inside the cordon.

Emergency response and police statement

Police were called to reports of a 'concern for welfare' at around 9pm. Onlookers said officers were informing passers-by it was a 'serious incident'. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement this morning, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said: "Shortly before 9pm on Friday, October 16, we were called to reports of a concern for welfare of a man at Chestergate, Stockport. Emergency services attended, but despite the best efforts of medical professionals, a man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene."

Investigation and next steps

GMP added: "There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death." A file of evidence is likely to be submitted to a coroner ahead of an inquest. No further details have been revealed.
