A man has been arrested and charged with murder following a fatal shooting in northern New South Wales that left one man dead and two others injured, one after being struck by a vehicle.
Chaotic Scene and Fatal Shooting
Mark Gary Brown, aged 36, was tracked down and arrested by police on Wednesday evening, hours after the alleged violent incident in Eungella, within the state's Northern Rivers region. The arrest followed a coordinated search involving police sniffer dogs in remote bushland near the Tweed River, close to the NSW-Queensland border, at approximately 6.40pm.
The events began earlier that day, around 1.25pm, when police were called to a property on Tyalgum Road. It is alleged that two men were shot at the location. Paramedics treated a 41-year-old man for a gunshot wound, but he tragically died at the scene. A second man, aged 38, also suffered a gunshot wound and later presented himself at a hospital for treatment.
Vehicle Incident and Multi-Site Investigation
Officers were subsequently alerted to another serious incident on the same road in Eungella. A 45-year-old man had been hit by a ute and sustained significant injuries to his leg, chest, and arm. Intensive care paramedics treated him at the scene before he was rushed to Gold Coast Hospital, where he remains under police guard and will be questioned.
NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Dave Waddell described the initial scene as "very confusing and chaotic." He revealed that the four men involved in the shooting are believed to have known each other, and detectives are investigating whether a dispute over property sparked the violence.
Arrest and Ongoing Police Probe
Following the shooting, it is alleged that the shooter and a fourth man fled the scene on foot. This prompted the extensive search operation that led to Brown's capture in the dense bushland. Brown was refused bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
Multiple crime scenes have been established as the investigation continues. A key focus for police on Thursday will be a further search of the bushland, as the firearm and any other weapons used in the shooting have not yet been recovered.
